CLEMSON — Clemson football needs help to make the 2024 ACC Championship Game.
The No. 23 Tigers (6-2, 5-1) sit in third in the ACC, behind No. 4 Miami (9-0, 5-0) and No. 13 SMU (8-1, 5-0), after their upset home loss to No. 22 Louisville (6-3, 4-2) last week. According to ESPN’s FPI, Clemson has a 2.4% chance to win the conference and a 12.8% chance to make the College Football Playoff.
In order for Clemson to make the ACC championship, it needs to win out in conference play against Virginia Tech on Saturday and Pittsburgh next week, then likely needs Miami and SMU to lose two ACC games. Here are three potential ACC tiebreakers for Clemson entering Week 11:
Note: In each scenario, the Tigers win the rest of their conference games to go 7-1 in ACC play.
Scenario 1: SMU undefeated, Clemson, Miami tie for second
The Hurricanes’ final three conference games are against Georgia Tech (5-4, 3-3), Wake Forest (4-4, 2-2) and Syracuse (6-2, 3-2). If Miami falls to Georgia Tech or Syracuse, it would advance to the ACC championship over Clemson because the tiebreaker would be win-percentage versus all common opponents.
Miami and Clemson’s common opponents are Wake Forest, Louisville, Florida State and Virginia Tech. Miami would be 4-0 and Clemson would be 3-1 because of its loss to Louisville, leaving the Tigers out of the title game.
If Miami loses to Wake Forest, the conference tiebreaker would go to win percentage versus common opponents based upon their order of finish because Miami and Clemson would have the same win-percentage against common opponents.
If Louisville finishes higher than Wake Forest in the standings, Miami advances to the ACC…
