Muskogee shuts out Putnam North, secures 6A-II-2 football district championship

(This article was updated to clarify that Muskogee won the 6A-II-2 district title.)

Here are three takeaways from Class 6A-II No. 1 Muskogee’s 36-0 win over fifth-ranked Putnam North in Week 10 of the Oklahoma high school football season on Thursday night.

This game was called at halftime due to inclement weather resulting in a lightening delay.

More: Carl Albert football QB Devin Woodring waited his turn to start. Now, he’s giving back.

Muskogee 36, Putnam North 0

Muskogee’s Jamarian Ficklin gets away from Stillwater’s Ethan Dudgeon during a high school football game between Muskogee and Stillwater in Stillwater, Okla., Friday, Nov. 3, 2023.

Player of the game: Jamarian Ficklin. The senior quarterback completed 10 of 16 passes for 122 yards and two touchdowns through the air while taking six rushes for 32 yards and an additional score on the ground. The Texas State commit also intercepted a pass from Putnam North quarterback Mason Jones while at safety in Muskogee’s secondary.

Key moment: After Putnam North forced an essential stop on second down while trailing by 14 points, the defense looked to force a stop and take over with a chance to score. However, Muskogee running back PJ Wallace had other plans. The senior escaped past defenders to break loose for a 42-yard run before being tackled in Putnam North territory. Wallace would punch in a 4-yard touchdown run to extend Muskogee’s lead to 22 toward the end of the first quarter.

Read option: Thursday’s victory secured Muskogee the 6A-II-2 football district title. The team will have a bye next week before playing again in the state quarterfinals on Nov. 22. With the win, Muskogee has now won 18 of its last 19 games, and the defending 6A-II champions pose a strong shot at repeating in the coming weeks.
