Today is Nov. 8, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the Longhorns played for the first time at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
After playing at Clark Field from 1896 through the start of the 1924 season, Texas hosted Baylor as its first guest at what was originally referred to as War Memorial Stadium. The debut in 1924 wasn’t dandy, though, as Texas lost 28-10. The loss was UT’s third in a four-game span that also included a tie.
Wrote Lloyd Gregory in following day’s Austin Statesman: “On the virgin turf of the Varsity Memorial Stadium and amid colorful and what should have been inspiring surroundings, the Texas Longhorns were forced Saturday to drink to the dregs from the bitter cup of defeat, pressed relentlessly to their lips. Fifteen thousand fans saw Texas gamely ‘drink its hemlock’ presented by Frank Bridges and his mighty Baylor Bears. Baylor, playing alert, heads-up ball triumphed over a Longhorn eleven that played indifferent football by a 28-10 margin.”

Things got better for UT in its next game at its new home as the Longhorns celebrated Thanksgiving on Nov. 27 with a 7-0 win over Texas A&M and future coach Dana X. Bible. Heading into this weekend’s game against Florida, Texas has compiled a 403-123-10 record over its 100 years at Royal-Memorial Stadium.
