How first-year coach’s gamble helped Lanier football get first MHSAA playoff win in 37 years

Lanier football won its first Mississippi high school football game in 37 years Friday thanks to some big defensive stops, a key touchdown and a big gamble by first-year coach Tommy Kelly.

“I’m just proud of the kids, man, they came out there and played hard in the second half,” Kelly said after his team scored twice and shut out Sumrall in the second half of a 28-21 MHSAA Class 4A first-round win. “I told them when I went to the locker room, ‘We got all our mistakes out the way.
