Malvern gets over an OHSAA football playoff hump with Jared Witherow-to-Rodney Smith magic & more

MALVERN — Malvern, which attacks scoreboards like clockwork, was right on time in a 42-14 Division VII football playoff rout of Lowellville on Friday.

In assorted games through an 11-1 run, the Hornets have manufactured 32, 34, 35, 36, 38 (twice), 40, 41 (three times) and now 42 points.

Lowellville head coach Andrew Mamula knew it was coming. Just not like this.

“Their quarterback is very accurate, and they have dynamic receivers,” he said. “But their defense is underrated. They played fast and they played aggressive.”

Malvern’s Roy Simmons scores on a pick-six against Lowellville, Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.

For the first time since 2009, Malvern won a second-round game and reached 11 wins.

“We’ve been stuck in this Week 12 lull,” head coach Matt Chiurco said. “We’re over that hump and now, whoever we play, and wherever, this is the fun part.”

The Hornets advanced to regional semifinals at a site to be determined against Hillsdale, which whacked Windham 43-14 Friday in a battle of 10-1 teams.

Malvern’s Rodney Smith makes a touchdown reception against Lowellville on Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.

“The past couple of years, we couldn’t get over the second step,” receiver Rodney Smith said after making his 18th touchdown catch. “This time we did.

“I think we can go on a big run. Our goal is to get to Tom Benson and maybe even win a ring.”

It will take three more wins to reach the state finals at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.

Only Division V power Garaway has had any luck stopping Malvern’s offense, and even the Pirates took a cannonball to the broadside in the form of a long Jared Witherow-to-Smith touchdown pass.

Witherow’s rewriting of Malvern’s career passing records has been a story, but Smith is making Hornet history, too.
