Memphis-Rice game includes unsportsmanlike conduct penalty…on everyone

Memphis football’s game against Rice on Friday night got a little chippy.

So chippy, in fact, that the referees had to hand out penalties to literally everyone on the field.

At the end of the third quarter, the Tigers had the ball when players from both teams had words after a play. The skirmish continued even though the quarter was over, with almost the entire Memphis sideline out near the 50-yard-line. The officials threw plenty of flags, then discussed what to do.

“Unsportsmanlike conduct,” referee Charles Lamertina ultimately announced, “On the entire offense and the entire defense.”

That’s not a call you hear at every college football game. And it led to plenty of chuckles from the crowd at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

Memphis led 17-13 at the end of the third quarter. The Tigers came in at 7-2 (3-2 AAC), while the Owls came in at 3-6 (2-3).
