Tupelo running back J.J. Hill has been voted Mr. Football for Class 7A.
The Mr. Football awards recognize the top player in the state in each classification. The other honorees this year are Hattiesburg quarterback Deuce Vance (6A), Gautier quarterback Trey Irving (5A), Greene County quarterback Jacoby King (4A), Noxubee County quarterback Kamario Taylor (3A), Sebastopol quarterback and defensive back Adarius McDougle (2A) and Velma Jackson athlete Tyshun Willis (1A).
Hill, a junior, has been the workhorse for Tupelo’s offense this season. The 6-foot, 226-pounder has rushed for 1,435 yards and 24 touchdowns on 147 carries, plus he’s caught 12 passes for 187 yards and two TDs. The Mississippi State commit has logged six 100-yard games this season, including three 200-yard games.
Hill’s efforts have helped Tupelo complete an undefeated regular season. The Golden Wave (10-0) open the playoffs next week at home versus Lewisburg.
The Mr. Football awards, which are based on performance in the regular season, were selected by a statewide committee of coaches and media members. An awards ceremony will be held Nov. 20 at the MHSAA Conference Center in Clinton.
