Winslow returns to sectional final thanks to another record-breaking performance

Nyqir “Boomer” Helton caught three touchdown passes and had an interception on defense as Winslow rolled to a 49-8 win over Manalapan in Saturday’s South Jersey Group 4 semifinal game.

WINSLOW – Nyqir Helton earned the nickname “Boomer” when he was younger because of the distance he could throw a football.

On Saturday, “Boomer” helped lower the boom as the Winslow Township High School football team checked back into the sectional final with a 49-8 victory over Manalapan in the South Jersey Group 4 semifinal game.

The top-seeded Eagles (11-0) will look to defend their sectional title when they host Shawnee (8-3) next Saturday. Shawnee, the third-seed, knocked off second-seeded Middletown North 27-17 in its semifinal on Friday.

In a high-flying offense that features a wealth of weapons, Helton has become one of the most productive. After posting seven receiving touchdowns last season, the junior boasts a team-best 12 TD catches this season, including four in the postseason.

“I could just throw the ball really far, they started calling me that,” Helton said about his “Boomer” nickname.

Helton made the most of his three catches in the game, finding the end zone on all three grabs from 69, 35 and 22 yards. His 126 total receiving yards marked the third time he topped the century mark this season and 12 of his 39 total catches have gone for TDs.

“Coach Bill (Belton) dials it up for us every week and we get the job done,” Helton said. “We started a little slow (on Saturday), but once we got it going, it’s all gas, no brakes from there.”

And it’s sophomore…
