Zeeland West football makes statement, shuts out St. Joseph for district title

ST. JOSEPH – Brody Maas looked like a lion chasing down its prey.

The Zeeland West linebacker chased the quarterback out of the pocket. It forced the QB to make a bad throw that was picked off by Dux defensive back Brandon Holman, who sprinted into the end zone for a pick-6.

It was that kind of game for Zeeland West as it dominated on both sides of the ball in a 42-0 win over St. Joseph High School on Friday night to win its third-straight Division 3 district championship.

“I knew we could defend very well,” Zeeland West coach John Shillito said. “But I didn’t know we could defend that team as well as we did.”

Zeeland West (10-1) got three rushing touchdowns from Jonah Leslie, two from Isaac VanderZwaag and the pick-6 from Holman. They also got three interceptions and didn’t have a single penalty.
