5 reactions/overreactions to Cincinnati Bearcats football vs. West Virginia

Three games remain on the Cincinnati Bearcats football schedule.

No opportunity is guaranteed, but a more pleasing path to bowl eligibility was bypassed Saturday at Nippert Stadium when the Cincinnati Bearcats took a first-quarter lead against West Virginia then allowed 24 unanswered points.

Down 24-7, Logan Wilson kept them alive with a pick in the end zone which prevented a 31-7 deficit. Brendan Sorsby then rallied the Bearcats to 14 straight points and UC had the ball with 7:16 left with the chance for a game-tying or possible game-winning drive.

Less than four minutes later. Sorsby’s arm was hit on a backward pass by Trey Lathan, Tyrin Bradley Jr. scooped the ball and ran into the end zone for a 31-21 lead. UC would get another possession and a Nathan Hawks 29-yard field goal but when West Virginia recovered the onside kick it was game, set and match.

Both teams now sit at 5-4 overall with UC 3-3 in the Big 12 and the Mountaineers now 4-2. Both are a win away from a postseason. West Virginia extended their lead in the all-time series to 18-3-1 with UC’s last win coming in the Big East at Nippert in 2009.

The Mountaineers have Baylor and UCF at home then are at Texas Tech. UC’s road is a bit murkier with No. 17 Iowa State (as of Saturday), No. 19 Kansas State and TCU.

“Anything can happen in this league,” Sorsby said. “We were down big and we found a way to scratch and claw back. We just have to find a way to finish it and close the door.”
