Bryce Underwood living up to billing: ‘I don’t know if you’re able to truly contain him’

LSU commitment and Belleville (Michigan) senior quarterback Bryce Underwood reset and delivered two memorable plays only one of the top players in the country can make. And they came after throwing an interception into a tight window.

On Belleville’s third drive Friday night vs. Saline in a Michigan high school football second-round playoff game, with a 14-0 lead, the five-star quarterback shook off the turnover and accounted for nearly all of the Tigers’ offense on a 90-yard touchdown drive. Underwood finished the drive by escaping a free rusher on fourth-and-10 from Saline’s 11, getting to the sideline, then cutting toward the pylon. Two Saline defenders were waiting, but Underwood lowered his shoulder and spun off them, staying on his feet to fall into the end zone (though the referees missed that he stepped out of bounds).

Saline answered with a touchdown with 20 seconds left in the half, but that was still too much time for Underwood and the Tigers’ offense. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Underwood dropped deep then delivered a strike to Antwon Thomas for an 87-yard touchdown, making it 28-7 and putting the game out of reach in the 42-7 victory in the Division 1 MHSAA district finals at Belleville High School. Underwood threw the ball from his own 10-yard line; it traveled 50 yards in the air to Thomas, who caught it at Saline’s 40 and raced in.

“That was very impressive but that’s Bryce Underwood,” Belleville co-head coach Calvin Norman said. “You can’t underestimate him….
