Michigan coach Sherrone Moore provides explanation for late game clock-management vs Indiana

On Saturday, Michigan football nearly upset No. 6 Indiana. Instead of celebrating ruining the Hoosiers’ perfect season, questions about Wolverines coach Sherrone Moore’s decision-making are front and center.

Moore is in his first year as Michigan’s coach after Jim Harbaugh’s departure to the NFL following last season’s national championship. Postgame, Moore was asked about one of his decisions with clock management with the Hoosiers beginning a drive from the Michigan 42-yard line with 1:35 remaining.

Following an 8-yard run by Ty Son Lawton, Moore allowed more than 20 seconds to come off the clock before finally calling a timeout. The point was moot, as Indiana picked up a first down on the next play and was able to run out the clock.

Moore and the Wolverines used their second timeout following a first down play by the Hoosiers. Indiana could then bleed the rest of the clock to move to 10-0. Michigan is 5-5. Both programs are under first-year coaches, but Curt Cignetti has helped turn around an Indiana program which had nine wins over the last three seasons.

“Yeah, just talking about conversations of what the play call was going to be, what we were going to do,” Moore said of the explanation. “That’s where that all came from.”

Michigan is on bye during Week 12. The Wolverines return to action on Nov. 23 vs Northwestern and close the season out on the road against Ohio State on Nov. 30. They need one win to earn bowl eligibility, and are looking to avoid missing a bowl for the first time since 2020 (they have not missed a bowl in a full season since 2014).
