Texas vs Florida: In Longhorns’ rout, what was Steve Sarkisian’s ‘toughest decision’?

Late in the second quarter against Florida on Saturday, Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian faced a defensive dilemma.

After Florida threw incomplete on a third-and-4 attempt from the Texas 31, a penalty flag decorated the turf at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Holding, Florida. Thus, Sarkisian considered whether to push Florida back 10 yards for another third-down play or let UF kicker Trey Smack try to cut into UT’s 21-0 lead with a 48-yard field goal.

Sarkisian opted to accept the penalty. Florida quarterback Aidan Warner was sacked by Texas defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau on the third-down re-do, and the Gators were forced to punt with 1 minute, 53 seconds left in the first half.

Texas defensive back Jaylon Guilbeau (3) sacks Florida quarterback Aidan Warner (16) during the first half of a football game at Royal-Memorial Stadium on Nov 9, 2024. Guilbeau’s sack helped preserve a 21-0 lead for Texas.

After the game, Sarkisian said that was his “toughest decision of the day.” Sarkisian described Smack as a “big-time kicker,” and he thought that taking the penalty would make things more difficult for the Gators.

“I just didn’t want to give up points, and then it kind of just played out the way that it went,” Sarkisian said. “Everybody was in unison, take the penalty. … That was a little bit more difficult than maybe just what kind of met the eye from afar.”

Even though Florida punted in the first half’s final two minutes, Texas quickly put together two scoring drives and entered halftime with a 35-0 lead. In what ended up being a 49-17 win for Texas (8-1, 4-1), Florida (4-5, 2-4) never got closer than 32 points in the second half.
