Kansas State football turns the page on Houston loss and shifts focus to Arizona State

MANHATTAN — Kansas State football coach Chris Klieman didn’t get where he in his profession by spooking easily.

That’s why, with an open week following the Wildcats’ surprising 24-19 loss to Houston, he made a point to sticking to the original plan. That meant extra rest for the veteran players and developmental opportunities for the younger ones that the staff hopes will be future stars.

In other words, it’s no time to panic.

“It’s easy to say, big picture, what have we got to get better at schematically, offensively and defensively,” said Klieman whose No. 19-ranked Wildcats return to action at 6 p.m. for a critical Big 12 game against Arizona State at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. “But the fact that it’s mid-November, it sometimes gets forgotten, we are a 7-2 football team that has a lot of things in front of us to play for.”

Yes, the Wildcats are 7-2, but with three games left in the regular season they are tied for third with Arizona State (7-2 overall), Iowa State (7-2) and West Virginia (5-4) for third in the Big 12 at 4-2. Brigham Young (9-0, 6-0) and Colorado (7-2, 5-1) occupy the top two spots, which if they win out would put them in the conference championship game.

“We don’t know, and we can’t control, what other teams are going to do,” Klieman said. “I think everybody knows this. A lot of things can still happen.
