Ohio State grade card: Buckeyes got what they wanted against Purdue

Nov. 10—A grade card on Ohio State’s 45-0 win over Purdue in which it became the sixth team to score 35 points or more against the Boilermakers this season:

OFFENSE: B+

The 433 yards of total offense Ohio State had against Purdue ranked exactly in the middle for the Buckeyes this season. OSU has gained more than 433 yards in four games (Western Michigan, Marshall, Michigan State, Oregon) and it had fewer than 433 yards in four games (Akron, Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State).

Will Howard completed 21 of 26 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score in a performance he rated as solid but far from perfect. TreVeyon Henderson rushed for 85 yards on only 6 carries. Jeremiah Smith had 6 catches for 87 yards and now is the freshman record holder for most catches, most touchdowns and most receiving yards at Ohio State. Those records belonged to Cris Carter, who set them in 1984.

There was a scary moment late in the first half when left guard Carson Hinzman appeared to be injured and was on the ground for several minutes but he returned to play in the second half after Austin Siereveld finished out the first half.

DEFENSE: A

Ohio State’s defense got its first shutout against a Big Ten team since it held Rutgers scoreless in 2017. If it adds a third shutout it would be the first time that has been done at Ohio State in a season since 2009.

OSU held Purdue to 206 yards of total offense and it probably could have kept that number even lower if it hadn’t experimented with some new alignments with only three defensive linemen, which didn’t always work well.

Defensive end Jack Sawyer scored the first touchdown of his career, which he said he’d dreamed about doing since he got to Ohio State. That TD happened eight seconds after another OSU score in the third quarter and started when J.T. Tuimoloau forced a fumble and…
