A look back at Tennessee’s victory at Georgia in 1998

No. 4 Tennessee (8-1, 5-1 SEC) will play at No. 10 Georgia (7-2, 5-2 SEC) on Saturday in Week 12 of the 2024 college football season.

Kickoff between the Vols and Bulldogs is slated for 7:30 p.m. EST at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia. ABC will televise the top 10 matchup.

Each week, Vols Wire looks back at a memorable game between Tennessee and its upcoming opponent.

Vols Wire highlights Tennessee’s, 22-3, victory at Georgia on Oct. 10, 1998.

Tennessee defeated rivals Florida, Georgia and Alabama during the 1998 season. Tennessee would go on to win the inaugural BCS national championship with a, 23-16, victory over Florida State in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl.

The Vols led Georgia, 9-3, at halftime after Jeff Hall kicked three field goals in the first half. Hall converted attempts of 27, 39  and 43 yards respectively. Georgia’s Hap Hines kicked a 48-yard field goal with 1 minute, 55 seconds remaining in the first quarter to tie the game.

In the third quarter, quarterback Tee Martin completed two 3-yard touchdown passing attempts to Cedrick Wilson and Peerless Price.

Martin completed 16-of-26 passing attempts for 156 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Price totaled five receptions for 35 yards and one touchdown, while Wilson recorded four receptions for 63 yards and one touchdown.

Travis Stephens was the Vols’ leading rusher, totaling 107 yards on 20 attempts.
