Guilford earns girls flag football IHSA All-State honors in first year

Four players from Guilford’s state-runner-up team — as well as the head coach — were recently named to the very first IHSA Girls Flag Football All-State Team, including two who made a similar list last year, even before the sport was sanctioned.

While Greg Taylor was named the first Coach of the Year, safety Zariah Burnett and linebacker Mya Page were both named to the first-team IHSA All-State squad. Quarterback Aishah Smith and all-around star Kamorrah Strong, who were both first-team All-State last year, were each second-teamers this year.

They were all presented with their awards at Halas Hall in Lake Forest, home of the Chicago Bears, this past weekend. The Bears and the Rockford Park District were in charge of the Rockford area’s girls flag football program until this season.

“I was pretty surprised (to get Coach of the Year), but I wasn’t surprised to have so many girls on the All-State Team,” Taylor said. “I’m just very thankful to have been able to coach a great group like this, and I’m very humbled… This was a special team.”

With 15 seniors, Guilford (21-1) fell only to Palatine Fremd, 24-12, back on Oct. 19 in the state championship game to take second in the one-class IHSA girls flag football state series. The Vikings had beaten Chicago Lane 20-6 in the quarterfinals then held off Chicago Whitney Young 6-0 in the semis.

Three of those seniors — the quarterback (Smith) and two more at running back (Page and Strong) — were named to the All-State Teams. Burnett was just a sophomore.
