Conemaugh Township grad Black sees first Penn State football action in win over Washington

Penn State football moved to 8-1 with a commanding 35-6 victory over Washington in its annual White Out game on Saturday night.

What may have gone unnoticed by many in the latter stages of the game was who graced the field at Beaver Stadium. Conemaugh Township alumnus Ethan Black was in the game for the final four offensive plays, earning his first action as a Nittany Lion. Black’s block on a first-down play helped spring a hole for running back Corey Smith, who raced 78 yards deep into Washington territory.

Black is one of the most decorated athletes in Somerset County history. He won PIAA Class 2A 100- and 200-meter dash gold twice, and also a member of the state champion 4×100 relay team in 2023. Black owns school records in the 100, 200 and 400 meters as well as the 4×100 relay. He was also a member of two District 5 basketball title teams. Black was a 4-year letter winner in football as well as three times in track and field.

While Saturday was Black’s first true game action at Penn State, the redshirt freshman wide receiver has been turning heads since his arrival.

In 2023, Black was named Developmental Squad Offensive and Special Teams Player of the Week on two different occasions for each unit.

Penn State is on the road the next two weeks at Purdue and Minnesota. Black’s next opportunity to see playing time will be in the regular season finale against Maryland on Nov. 30

Note: Penn State University did not make Black available for an interview as of Wednesday evening.
