Father-son duo John and Jarrett Gronski share Bemidji State football bond for life

Nov. 12—Jarrett Gronski wasn’t expecting to cry the morning before playing Wayne State.

Like most athletes, the Bemidji State football team’s senior running back has his pregame rituals. But that routine shook out a little differently before the Beavers’ game against the Wildcats.

John Gronski — Jarrett’s father and a prolific running back for BSU back in the late 1980s — was officially inducted into the Bemidji State Hall of Fame on Nov. 2, just a few hours before the Beavers took on Wayne State at Chet Anderson Stadium.

Watching his father celebrated by friends, family and former teammates for his illustrious playing career evoked strong emotions from Jarrett.

“I’ve been telling a couple players, I wasn’t expecting to cry before Saturday’s game,” Jarrett said. “Being at the ceremony and that induction ceremony, it was cool just to see all the support that he had. It was able to encapsulate how big of a deal it truly was and how much it meant to him. … Definitely brought out all the emotions for Saturday.”

Likewise, John couldn’t help feeling overwhelmed by the support and love from those in attendance — his biological family, as well as his football family.

“It was very emotional, and of course to see Jarrett sitting there (at) the ceremony before a game, a big game … for my son to be able to alter his routine, game day routine, it was an incredible day,” John said. “It was just so special, to have most of my family there and then my family mates — my teammates from when I played — and then we also had some of our tailgating family members (at) the ceremony.”

At that afternoon’s football game following the ceremony, John donned his old retro green BSU football jacket and took to the sidelines as the Beavers’ honorary captain.

It was yet another opportunity for John to watch his son play for his alma…
