The short answer for Michigan football running back Kalel Mullings was no, but it’s not what he said.
The question posed to the Wolverines’ lead ball carrier: Did he get an explanation for why he received one carry in the first half of Michigan’s 20-15 loss to Indiana, and a carry that didn’t come until the second quarter at that?
“I don’t know how to answer that one,” the senior said Tuesday night.
Michigan running back Kalel Mullings (20) runs against Oregon linebacker Bryce Boettcher (28) during the first half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.
Mullings stammered for about 15 seconds before he responded. He sounded as baffled as many observers were Saturday when they saw U-M’s top running back standing next to assistant coach Tony Alford on the sideline as senior Donovan Edwards and sophomore Ben Hall rotated for most of the first half.
Postgame, coach Sherrone Moore said he felt Edwards had out-practiced Mullings the week prior and added he had wanted to get Hall some carries for a few weeks. On Monday evening, Moore hinted on “Inside Michigan Football” radio show that Mullings may have been less than 100%.
The running back shot down that notion, too.
“I felt like I had been practicing fine,” he said. “I just roll with the punches and do what is asked of me. At the end of the day, they’re the coaches. They’re the ones in charge of making decisions like that.
“I’m banged up all season and hurting, for sure, but not injured. There’s a different between hurt and injured. But yeah, I don’t know.”
