Before quarterback Joe Burrow made his mark as a national championship-winning quarterback at LSU in 2019, he was a backup for the Ohio State football team.
But the now-Bengals signal caller admitted this week at least one other option was available to him.
Among several gems from Burrow’s revealing press conference Wednesday: Los Angeles Chargers first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh tried to recruit Burrow when Harbaugh was the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines, but after Burrow already had committed to OSU.
Burrow talked about Harbaugh ahead of Sunday night’s Week 11 matchup between the Bengals and Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

“He had just got the job at Michigan that January after that (2014) season,” Burrow explained. “I had been committed to Ohio State for five or six months at that point. So I think Coach (Harbaugh) was trying to make a big splash trying to flip the Ohio State quarterback commit.
“I’m not entirely sure he knew exactly who I was or what I could do at that point. I think he was just trying to make a little splash there.”
Burrow was a four-star recruit coming out of Athens High School, according to 247Sports. He was considered the seventh-best dual-threat quarterback available that year, the 10th-best prospect out of Ohio and No. 210 nationally. He threw for over 11,400 yards with the Bulldogs and was Ohio’s Mr. Football his senior year.
Once at Ohio State, Burrow redshirted as a freshman before playing sparingly in 2016 and 2017 (a combined 11 games, 29 completions of 39 attempts for 287 yards and two touchdowns). The following offseason, Dwayne Haskins edged out Burrow in a quarterback competition that former Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer said was very close.
