Spartans heading out west in latest USA TODAY bowl projections

Michigan State football is heading out west in the latest bowl projections from Erick Smith of USA TODAY.

Smith has the Spartans landing in the Rate Bowl against Texas Tech of the Big 12 in his latest batch of bowl projections released this week. The Spartans were previously slated for the GameAbove Sports Bowl in his previous projections released last week.

Michigan State is 4-5 overall and 2-4 in Big Ten play on the year after back-to-back losses the past two weeks. The Spartans will need to win two of its final three games against Illinois, Purdue and Rutgers to reach bowl eligibility.
