Jets lose Spencer Shrader after Chiefs sign kicker off practice squad

The Jets will need to start another kicker this Sunday.

After Spencer Shrader was perfect for Gang Green in Arizona last week, the 25-year-old place kicker was signed off the Jets practice squad by the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday.

The move comes after the defending Super Bowl champs expect longtime kicker Harrison Butker to miss 3-4 weeks with a knee injury.

The Jets elevated Shrader for their Week 10 matchup with the Cardinals where he was 2-for-2 in field goal attempts — the longest coming from 45 yards out. They relegated him back to the practice squad after the game, leaving him unprotected, which allowed the Chiefs the opportunity to grab Shrader.

According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, the Jets tried to keep Shrader by offering him a spot on the roster but the Notre Dame product chose to play for the 9-0 Chiefs and help their continued pursuit of a perfect season. He’ll kick for Kansas City this Sunday against the Bills in Buffalo.

As for the Jets, Anders Carlson is likely the kicker for this Sunday. Carlson will be the fourth different kicker in as many weeks for the Jets after Greg Zuerlein, Riley Patterson and Shrader.

Carlson was signed to the Jets practice squad last week and is the only kicker on the active roster or practice squad after Shrader’s departure and Gang Green releasing Patterson following New York’s win against the Houston Texans.

Carlson, a sixth-round pick for the Packers out of Auburn in 2023, was signed to the 49ers practice squad in October and made two starts this season. In those games, Carlson was 5-for-5 on field goals and 3-for-4 on extra points.
