5 things to watch when Cincinnati Bearcats football takes on Iowa State

Two Big 12 football squads with multiple connections meet Saturday night in Ames, Iowa when the Cincinnati Bearcats attempt to knock off the Iowa State Cyclones.

Last year, in their only previous meeting, Iowa State won decisively, 30-10. UC held a 7-3 first-quarter lead but was outscored 27-3 from there. The Bearcats were held to 115 yards rushing and just 99 passing yards. Tyson Veidt was Iowa State’s linebackers coach in that game; now, he heads up the Cincinnati Bearcats defense.

Both teams are out to break two-game skids as Iowa State suffered its first loss at home 23-22 to Texas Tech on Homecoming Nov. 2. Last Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas whirled past the Cyclones in a 45-36 score-fest.

The Bearcats lost a night game at Colorado Oct. 26, 34-23, then handed West Virginia 17 points off turnovers last Saturday in a 31-24 defeat at Nippert Stadium.

Cincinnati Bearcats quaarterback Brendan Sorsby (2) kept UC in the game vs. West Virginia with his running, but also gave up three turnovers to the Mountaineers which resulted in 17 points.

“When you drop eight (defenders) there’s not a lot of areas to throw the ball,” Becht said. “It’s going to be a good day for me to see if I can get through my progressions and get to my last read. It’s just figuring out the ways he (Veidt) has made it his own. It’s definitely not the same that Coach Heacock (Iowa State defensive coordinator Jon) runs. Coach Veidt has his little…
