Jimmies, Vikings meeting for the Paint Bucket in season finale

Nov. 15—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown and Valley City State football teams finish their seasons against one another in the annual Paint Bucket game at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, with an uncertain future for the rivalry.

“That our guys come out and play a better football game than the last time we played these guys and with the Bucket on the line and potentially for the last time,” Jimmies head coach Brian Mistro said. “Our guys need to come out locked and loaded and focused to win this football game.”

With the news that the Jimmies are moving up to the NCAA Division II level and the Vikings are moving to the Frontier Conference, the status of the rivalry is undetermined.

Despite being a Jimmies football alumnus, Mistro said he wants to win the Paint Bucket more for his players than himself.

“It would mean a lot to our alums, our community, these players, the players that came before them, the players that are going to come after them that don’t know what this rivalry meant,” Mistro said. “It’s gonna mean a lot.”

Since 1909, the Jimmies and Vikings have played 125 times with the Vikings owning a 65-55-5 record.

“They’re confident and they think that they’re gonna come in and beat us because that’s what they’ve done and they’ve done it consistently for about a decade,” Mistro said. “So it’s our job to eliminate some of their overconfidence with us going and hitting them in the mouth.”

The game is the final collegiate game for 20 seniors including fifth-year senior Jed Rantz.

“It would mean a lot. I’ve been playing football for a long time, been playing football with these guys a lot,” Rantz said. “It would mean the world to not just my team but the teams following us and the teams before us it would mean a lot.”

The Jimmies and Vikings previously played on Oct. 12 with the Vikings getting a 38-7 win.
