The playoffs are finally here, and this is where the season gets truly exciting.
For teams across Oklahoma, this is what all the summer conditioning, early-morning practices and grueling matchups have been building toward. There is nothing quite like playoff football — the stakes are higher, the rivalries are fiercer and every play carries the weight of an entire season.
Here in Rogers County, we started the year with nine teams battling it out for a chance to extend their seasons. Now, only three remain: Claremore, Sequoyah and Foyil.
Each of these teams has earned their spot in the postseason and carries the hopes of their communities into this next chapter. For the others, their playoff dreams may have come to an end, but they’ve laid the groundwork for next year while turning their attention to basketball, wrestling or whatever else lies ahead this winter.
Then there is Claremore Christian, whose season ended in the most dramatic way possible.
The Warriors had a 28-6 halftime lead in the inaugural Frontier Christian Athletic Association championship against Wichita Faith Academy. They were poised to secure the program’s third championship since 2018, but a stunning second-half collapse saw them fall 46-44. It was a heartbreaking end to a promising season, but a game that will no doubt fuel them heading into 2025.
As for me, I’ve been tracking these teams all season, and now it is my turn to step up in the postseason.
I usually manage at least one perfect week of picks each year, but 2024 has been stubbornly elusive. I am sitting at a solid 81.5% on the season, but I want that perfect week.
Here is to hoping it comes at the perfect time — with playoff football on the line.
