Wesley Wittler guides Sully Buttes to Class 9B football title over Faulkton Area

Nov. 14—VERMILLION — Fifth-seeded Sully Buttes rode the hot hand of dual-threat quarterback Wesley Wittler to a Class 9B high school football championship on Thursday at the DakotaDome.

Wittler passed for 194 yards, ran for 158 yards and accounted for all five of the Chargers’ touchdowns, as Sully Buttes avenged its lone loss of the season with a 34-14 victory over No. 2 Faulkton Area.

The win snapped a 35-year title drought for the Chargers, who finished 11-1 and claimed their second playoff-era state title and the first since topping Class 9A in 1989.

“We thought we had a good scheme going into it and made adjustments from the first time we played them,” Sully Buttes head coach Tom Moore told SDPB-TV in a postgame interview. “That’s what we’ve done all year, and we’re happy our game plan came together.”

Wittler, a junior, earned Joe Robbie MVP and most outstanding back honors for his efforts, which included completing 13-of-17 pass attempts while also adding six tackles to his tally on defense. Gavin Barber hauled in seven passes for 73 yards and two scores with 42 yards rushing, while Teghan Westphal had a 68-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown. Senior Bo McGee was named the most outstanding lineman of the title game.

Sully Buttes scored on each of its first two possessions to take an early 16-6 lead and pushed ahead 22-6 by halftime. Both second-half scores came on big plays, with the Wittler-to-Westphal connection followed by a 66-yard run by Wittler that pushed the margin to 34-6 late in the third quarter.

“We just came out and executed,” Wittler said. “Credit to (Faulkton), they’re a great football team, and their front is really good. But our coaches just told us to take care of our jobs, and today was a good day.”

For Faulkton (9-3), Gian DiMaria went 11-of-26 passing for 169 yards and one touchdown, a 25-yard…
