Ball State football will begin a national search for its next football coach after firing Mike Neu on Saturday.
The Cardinals dismissed Neu after an overtime loss to Buffalo on Tuesday eliminated them from bowl eligibility for the third season in a row. Neu was hired in 2016 and was in the midst of his ninth season when he was fired. He compiled a 40-63 record during his tenure and led Ball State to a Mid-American Conference title in 2020.
Neu was a star quarterback at Ball State from 1990-93 and is the only person to ever win a MAC Championship as a player (1993) and coach (2020) for the same school.
Here are some candidates who would make sense as a replacement for Neu as Ball State begins its coaching search:
Tyler Stockton, Boise State defensive coordinator

Boise State defensive coordinator Tyler Stockton is the most obvious candidate given his recent experience with the program.
Stockton joined Ball State as a co-defensive coordinator in 2019 and was named the full-time coordinator ahead of the 2020 season. In his first year as defensive coordinator, he helped lead Ball State to the MAC title. In his final year at Ball State, he led the Cardinals’ defense to top-25 national rankings in rush defense (20th) and total defense (21st) while ranking 32nd nationally in pass defense.
Boise State currently sits at No. 13 in the College Football Playoff rankings and is projected to make the CFP as the Mountain West champion. The Broncos rank 61st nationally in total defense (359.3 yards per game allowed) and 72nd in scoring defense (25.11 points per game allowed) in Stockton’s first season.
