DEWITT — The Petoskey football team knew only one feeling following games through 11 weeks of the 2024 season.
The one they were trying to avoid finally showed up Friday night in DeWitt.
Meeting the No. 1 ranked team in a Division 3 regional championship, DeWitt delivered defeat to Petoskey for the very first time in a 70-34 final.
The loss closed out an 11-1 season for Petoskey, the most wins ever for a Northmen team, which only now knows the hurt of a loss.
“This group, it’s a special group,” Petoskey coach Jim Webb said. “You don’t have the kind of season we had without it being a special group. They showed their fight again tonight. It hurts. It hurts a lot, but that’s half the battle. They didn’t think of it as too big of a moment.”
DeWitt improved to 12-0 with the win and advanced to meet Zeeland West (11-1) in a semifinal matchup next week.

The night came with one big play after another, with six touchdowns between the two scored from 45 yards out or more, four over 60 yards. The two teams also combined for 1,243 yards of offense.
The game also came with the Panthers jumping out to a 35-7 advantage in the opening half, before the Northmen scored 21 points unanswered to bring it to a 35-28 game midway through the third quarter.
DeWitt then went on a 28-0 run of their own, scoring the final of the bunch on the defensive side.
