Gameday Central: Everything you need to know before New Mexico State vs Texas A&M

New Mexico State (2-7, 1-5 Conference USA) returns to the road for a matchup against No. 15 Texas A&M (7-2, 5-1 SEC) at 5:45 p.m. Saturday. NM State will play its yearly, so-called “buy game” against A&M and will receive a $1.6 million sum for the Aggies-Aggies contest.

NM State is coming off a 41-28 home defeat to Western Kentucky last week. NM State committed five turnovers that resulted in 20 Hilltopper points, greater than WKU’s margin of victory. Junior running backs Mike Washington and Seth McGowan rushed for 152 yards and 113 yards, respectively, and three combined touchdowns, making it the first time NM State has had two 100-yard rushers in a game since 2016. Its 331 total rushing yards were also a season-high. NM State also earned two takeaways after going all of October without one.

A&M is coming off a bye week after losing to South Carolina 44-20 on the road on Nov. 2. A&M’s star running back Le’Veon Moss suffered a season-ending lower-body injury against the Gamecocks and won’t play against NM State. Freshman Marcel Reed started at quarterback against the Gamecocks over redshirt sophomore Conner Weigman, throwing for 206 yards, one touchdown and one interception, and is expected to start against NM State. A&M is in its first season under new coach Mike Elko, who NM State coach Tony Sanchez called a “great hire” on Monday.

Junior quarterback Santino Marucci will start for NM State and will split plays with senior Brandon Nunez, similar to the WKU game.
