Texas high school football playoffs: One good half all Westlake needs in bi-district win

Westlake took its first step to a possible Class 6A Division I state championship by defeating Vista Ridge 46-17 in a bi-district playoff game Friday night at Chaparral Stadium.

After a slow start, Westlake quarterback Rees Wise had a hot hand in the second half, finishing with 262 passing yards. That included touchdown strikes of 43 and 70 yards to Brody Wilhelm.

Westlake (10-1) advances to the area round of the playoffs and will face San Antonio Brennan (10-1) at 7 p.m. Friday at Burger Stadium.

Wilhelm was the offensive star, catching four passes for 154 yards. But while the offense played well enough to gain a victory, it was the Chaparrals’ defense that stood tall, allowing only 247 yards. Westlake cornerback George Jones intercepted a pair of passes.

It wasn’t a perfect Westlake game, though. The Chaps held a precarious 18-10 lead at halftime, but head coach Tony Salazar didn’t need a fire-and-brimstone speech to get his players’ attention.

“(Vista Ridge) had our attention at halftime, no doubt,” Salazar said. “Not much was said (in the locker room). I looked at the seniors on the football team and said, ‘Hey, is that what we’re going to be? Are we better than that?’ And they came out and led this football team in the second half.

Westlake outscored Vista Ridge (6-5) 28-7 after halftime.

Vista Ridge quarterback Kaden Arnot completed 19 of 36 passes for 194 yards, including a short touchdown pass to JD Jackson that gave the Rangers a 7-5 lead in the first quarter. Jackson would cap the game’s scoring with…
