Nov. 15—A position-by-position look at who has the edge as New Mexico hosts No. 19 Washington State:

Projected starter: Devon Dampier, So.
Backup: Isaiah Chavez, R-Sr.
Washington State
Projected starter: John Mateer, R-So.
Backup: Brandon Hills, R-Fr. OR Chris Barnes, Fr.
Analysis: Washington State head coach Jake Dickert made it clear how he felt about John Mateer (2,332 passing yards, 22 touchdowns, six interceptions) this week.
“I think John Mateer is one of the 10 best quarterbacks in the country,” the Cougars’ third-year coach said during a press conference Monday. “I think he’s the best quarterback on the west coast — in my opinion, right? And I say that very firmly.”
He also made it clear how he feels about Devon Dampier.
“This quarterback is a problem, okay?” Dickert added. “He had more yards from scrimmage than John does. And hopefully that’ll wake everybody up — like, this guy is real.”
Advantage: Mateer’s played his last three games without throwing an interception. In an ultra-intriguing quarterback matchup — and for this game, perhaps the most important position on the field come Saturday — that’s enough for a slim edge here. Washington State
