Winner holds off Sioux Valley in battle of unbeaten teams for state Class 11B football title

VERMILLION — Thirty-six later, there was no magic comeback in the DakotaDome for Sioux Valley’s high school football team.

Trailing 20-14, the top-seeded Cossacks began their final possession at their own 9-yard line with under 90 seconds and no timeouts remaining.

Second-seeded Winner (12-0) kept the Cossacks at bay and held on for the six-point win as time expired in the state Class 11B football championship on Friday afternoon.

The Cossacks’ bid for a second state championship came up short and ended an 11-1 season.
