Bethune-Cookman loses to Texas Southern; San Diego routs Stetson

Texas Southern rallied for all 17 of its points in the second half and downed Bethune-Cookman 17-14 Saturday in Houston.

The Wildcats had a late chance to tie the game. With four seconds left, Cade Hechter’s 54-yard field-goal attempt fell short, sealing the Tigers’ victory. Bethune-Cookman (2-9) had traversed 44 yards on 13 plays for the final-drive opportunity.

After the missed kick, Texas Southern (4-6) took a knee and drained the final ticks off the clock.

The Wildcats scored the only points of the first half on a 62-yard bomb from Cam Ransom to Maleek Huggins in the second quarter. They led at halftime (7-0) for the second straight game and third time this season.

Bethune-Cookman also tallied the game’s final points with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Ransom hit Lorenzo Jenkins for a 6-yard TD.

Bethune-Cookman’s Maleek Huggins (9) makes the downfield reception only to have the play called back on a penalty during a game with Mercer at Daytona Stadium in Daytona Beach, Saturday, Sept. 7, 2024.

But between those two plays, the Tigers scored three times. Athean Renfro rushed for two touchdowns — one in the third quarter and one in the fourth — and Christian Avelar nailed a 27-yard field goal in the third.

The Wildcats outgained Texas Southern 334-317.

Ransom threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers. Huggins gathered a game-high 97 receiving yards.

Kevin Washington Jr. and Joshua Thornhill led Bethune-Cookman with seven tackles each. Jeremy Greaves Jr. accounted for its lone sack. Naim Lassiter grabbed an interception.

For the Tigers, Renfro turned 22 carries into 129 rushing yards. They mustered eight tackles for loss.

Next week, the Wildcats will cap their 2024 campaign with the annual Florida Classic rivalry game against Florida A&M. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Camping…
