Most people expected Texas A&M to run New Mexico State off Kyle Field on Saturday evening. NM State lost decisively, but it may have exceeded expectations.
NM State (2-8) lost 38-3 to SEC foe A&M (8-2), covering Bet MGM’s final 38.5-point spread in favor of the home team. A&M controlled the game and was never in danger of losing, but there were moments when NM State held its own.
Those moments were on defense.
NM State earned two interceptions in its own territory off multiple A&M quarterbacks, denying the latter even more points. A&M freshman Marcel Reed threw one to senior cornerback Keonte Glinton with nine seconds left in the first half, and A&M redshirt sophomore Conner Weigman threw one to redshirt sophomore safety Tayden Barnes with 10:42 left to play. Barnes celebrated by punting the ball into the crowd, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

However, NM State had plenty of struggles. A&M started fast with 17 first-quarter points and scored on its first four drives. A&M running back Amari Daniels earned the biggest play of the night, rushing for a 71-yard score on the third drive of the game.
NM State’s passing woes remained. Junior quarterback Santino Marucci started for the fifth time this season and completed 6 of 19 passes for only 80 yards. NM State continued its two-quarterback system from last week’s 41-28 loss to Western Kentucky, with senior Brandon Nunez completing one pass for 12 yards.
