Bi-district Honor Roll: Which local football players had the top performances?

ALEDO — Quarterback Ty Thompson and the Graham defense each continued impressive streaks in the Steers’ 60-0 victory against Fort Worth Dunbar in a Region I-4A Division II bi-district playoff matchup Thursday at Bearcat Stadium.

Graham (10-1) advances to the area round where it will meet Monahans (6-5) at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater.

The shutout against Dunbar was the Steers’ ninth of the season and extended their streak of holding opponents without a touchdown to 30 quarters. The only points scored against Graham during that span was a 47-yard field goal by Eagle Mountain in the regular season finale.

The Steers held Dunbar to 71 yards. The defense recorded a safety and Santiago Zamora returned an interception 22 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Thompson maintains his own incredible streak of not throwing an interception this season. The senior quarterback was 17 of 24 for 215 yards and two TDs against Dunbar. For the season, he’s completed 135 of 220 passes for 2,059 yards, 20 TDs and no interceptions.

Kicker Ozzy Trejo made three field goals for the Steers, connecting from 35, 29 and 23 yards out.

Vernon’s defense shuts down Sweetwater

GRAHAM — Vernon shut down an explosive Sweetwater offense for a 28-9 victory in a Region I-3A Division I bi-district matchup at Newton Field on Friday.

The Lions (8-3) advance to the area round where they’ll meet Amarillo River Road (5-6) at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.

Sweetwater went into Friday averaging 35.6 points per game but struggled to move the ball against Vernon, finishing with just 189 total yards. Tyce Payne led the team with 10 tackles, including 3½ for loss, while Landon Bynum added five tackles for loss and three sacks.
