Memphis football beat UAB on Saturday at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium, and the Tigers did so with injured linebacker Karmelo Overton cheering his teammates on from the sidelines.
Overton collapsed during Memphis’ Nov. 8 win over Rice and was taken to a local hospital with what coach Ryan Silverfield called a spinal injury. He was released from the hospital the next day and was back at the team facility in the lead up to the game against UAB.
“We get off the buses after Tiger Walk and we see him in the locker room with a smile on his face and it’s like, ‘Man, OK,’ ” Silverfield said Monday. “It just feels like all is right in the world when you get there and see one of your guys in there and he’s standing up with a smile on his face, he’s clapping for the guys.”
It had been a scary moment a week earlier when Overton was hit by two Rice players on a kickoff and was briefly down on the field. He got up and started to run toward the Memphis sideline, but his legs gave out and he was down on the field for an extended period of time. He was surrounded by members of the training staff and teammates during the timeout.
Overton, a redshirt freshman from Ozark, Alabama, has made one tackle this season.
“He was as intense as anybody,” Silverfield said about Overton against UAB. “I think he was talking smack on the sideline. I think one time he grabbed me and pulled me back. It’s just great because of what he means not only to the program but to his brothers out there. Just to have him around us, and more than anything, that he is, in his current condition, stable and healthy.”
Memphis (9-2, 5-2 AAC) is off this week. The Tigers will conclude the regular season at Tulane on Thanksgiving Day.
