Nebraska and USC football fans are in the same boat, and it’s miserable

Nebraska football fans and USC football fans watched Saturday’s game in the Los Angeles Coliseum and surely thought, “Man, they’re just as bad as we are.” At some point, that thought had to come across the minds of the Husker and Trojan fans who took in that game. The field looked beautiful with its old-school USC end zone and the fresh yellow paint. The weather was gorgeous, a sunny and mild day in Los Angeles which reminds people in the Midwest how great it is to go to the Rose Bowl on January 1 and enjoy a respite from bitter winter cold. It was a great day to watch football in the Coliseum. The aesthetics surrounding the event could not have been better.

The actual game itself was one long eyesore. It couldn’t have been much uglier than it was. Lincoln Riley and Matt Rhule have two poorly-coached teams on their hands. This was bad football, and it was shocking to see these teams — in the middle of November, 10 games into their season — lack basic fundamentals to such a jarring extent.

USC and Nebraska have fallen from the mountaintop. Both fan bases had reason to think that things would change for the better with Lincoln Riley and Matt Rhule in charge. It just hasn’t happened. There’s so much to discuss. Where to begin? We just have to start somewhere and take it from there:

How bad was this game? Start with how bad Dylan Raiola was for Nebraska. He slid two yards short of a makeable first down on a third-down play. He didn’t throw to wide-open receivers for what would have been touchdowns or first downs. He stared down a receiver with ample time in the pocket and got intercepted. He’s a freshman, yes, but this is Game 10. Raiola made mistakes we would expect — and accept — from a player making his first or second…
