Illinois football is very unlikely to make the final 12 of the College Football Playoffs when the final rankings are released in a few weeks. But the Fighting Illini can celebrate their inclusion, anyway.
The Illini (7-3, 4-3) landed at No. 25 in the third CFP rankings of the 12-team playoff, the program’s first appearance in 2024. Illinois is one of five Big Ten teams in the ranks, with the other four all in the top five: No. 1 Oregon, No. 2 Ohio State, No. 4 Penn State and No. 5 Indiana.
Illinois is No. 25 in the latest Associated Press poll and receiving votes in the US LBM coaches poll ahead of its road game at Rutgers, set for 11 a.m. Saturday in New Jersey.
When was Illinois last ranked in the CFP?
The Illini were last ranked by the CFP committee in 2022, when it went on to finish 8-4 and play in the ReliaQuest Bowl in Tampa, Florida.
