Week 13 has already started, the Nov. 8 Selection Sunday for bowls is two and a half weeks away and Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl executive director Bernie Olivas doesn’t have much clarity on who is coming to El Paso for the New Year’s Eve tradition.
“It’s a jungle. It’s a mess right now,” Olivas said in a tone that indicated some appreciation for the chaos. “We’re in Week 13 and I’ve been here all day looking at the schedule and standings. By week 13 we usually have two teams from each conference. I don’t think we’ve ever had a year with this many possibilities from both conferences.

“The Pac-12 is a little narrower USC, UCLA, Washington and maybe Cal. The ACC is mumbo-jumbo. By next week we’ll know a lot more.”
A survey of bowl projections is a little narrower, with USC and its brand name popping up more often than not on the Pac-12 Legacy side, while the ACC truly does look like picking a name from a hat.
“I can tell you who isn’t going to come from the ACC: Clemson, SMU, Miami,” Olivas said, who then named seven teams who could come. “There’s not a team there we wouldn’t want.”
One of those ACC teams is Cal, which counts as a Pac-12 Legacy and would play another team from its current league, the ACC if it is picked. However, there are rules against rematching a regular-season game, so that would be tricky.
Other than that, Olivas mentioned Louisville, Georgia Tech, Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, NC State, Boston College, Pitt, Syracuse and Cal as teams that could be coming here.
The most common teams mentioned in projections are Louisville and North Carolina. Olivas admitted North Carolina, with coach Mack Brown, would be particularly attractive.
