Dakota Wesleyan football nets five players on all-GPAC teams

Nov. 20—MITCHELL — Five Dakota Wesleyan football players garnered recognition on all-Great Plains Athletic Conference football honor teams, the conference announced on Wednesday. The selections were made by conference coaches.

Redshirt sophomore John Pica was named to the all-GPAC first team for his work on the offensive line after garnering second-team recognition last year. The Dell Rapids native appeared in nine games this season, helping create holes on the line for the Tigers’ ground game to flourish. DWU finished the season averaging 176.2 yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry, both third-best in the conference.

Running back Koby Kayser netted his first all-conference recognition, being named to the all-GPAC second team. The redshirt sophomore out of Emery was named GPAC offensive player of the week for his 146-yard, four-touchdown performance against Briar Cliff on Nov. 9, and finished with the third-most rushing yards (923) and fifth-most touchdowns (eight) in the GPAC.

Defensive back Landon Ruesink earned all-GPAC second-team recognition as well as an honorable mention nod for his work as a punt returner. Ruesink, a junior from Dell Rapids, led the conference with 11 pass breakups in the secondary, also collecting two interceptions and 53 tackles. On special teams, he finished with 140 punt return yards, which was fourth-best in the GPAC.

Carter Robinson was named as an honorable mention pick for his play as the Tigers’ starting quarterback. The sixth-year transfer student from Augustana was third in the conference with a 63.1% completion percentage, throwing for 1,853 yards and 12 touchdowns. Robinson was also tenth in the GPAC with 584 rushing yards, scoring five times.

Watertown product Cole Holden also received an honorable mention nod. The junior wide receiver set career-highs with 52 catches, 587…
