Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day waits to take the field before the game against the Purdue Boilermakers at Ohio Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024 in Columbus, Ohio.
If you told me three months ago that a late-season matchup with Indiana would be one of the biggest games on Ohio State football’s schedule, I would have scoffed. But here we are. The undefeated Hoosiers come to Ohio Stadium looking to crash the College Football Playoff as the unwelcome guest.
In reality, unless the Buckeyes blow Indiana out, Curt Cignetti’s club should be in. “Should” being the operative word. The power players in the SEC are already writing a narrative that Indiana hasn’t played a tough enough schedule. If that ends up being the case, then a 12-team playoff changed nothing and just expanded entries for those claiming superiority due to their namesake.
Cignetti hasn’t been shy about standing up to the bullies of the Big Ten. He stirred the pot right from the beginning when introduced at Assembly Hall before an IU basketball game and famously stated, “Purdue sucks … but so does Michigan and Ohio State,” to the roar of the crowd. A less eloquent channeling of Jim Tressel, but got the point across nonetheless … he didn’t come to Indiana to be anyone’s doormat.
Make no mistake: the Hoosiers are not scared of the mighty Buckeyes. In fact, because no one expected them to be in this position, I’d argue that makes them even more dangerous. What do they have to lose? If Indiana wins, it’s validation. If not, what IU fan is complaining about an 11-1 record with a valid case for inclusion in the CFP?
It’s been a Cinderella season so far the Hoosiers and Ohio State will be looking to ensure the glass slipper doesn’t fit. Here’s a complete breakdown and prediction for what will happen Saturday.
