OXFORD — Despite a more high-profile potential candidate making waves, Ole Miss football offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. has emerged as the front-runner for the Florida Atlantic job, per reports.
The Owls (2-8, 0-6 AAC) fired coach Tom Herman on Monday. Weis Jr. is a name to watch when Florida Atlantic hires its coach, per Chris Vannini and Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.
On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported NFL Hall of Famer Ray Lewis was in the mix for the job. Those rumors have since lost steam.
There are connections between Ole Miss (8-2, 4-2 SEC) and Florida Atlantic that make the pairing sensical. Weis Jr. coached at FAU from 2018-19 as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He overlapped with Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin, who was the head coach at FAU from 2017 to 2019
Kiffin and Weis Jr. have formed a strong team. The Owls offense averaged 36.4 points in 2019, which was No. 14 nationally. It has carried over to Oxford. Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart is No. 3 in the nation in passing yards with 3,409.
Weis Jr. is the son of longtime NFL assistant coach Charlie Weis.
