NORMAN — OU football head coach Brent Venables is in the midst of an offensive coordinator search.
Outside of prepping for the Sooners’ final two regular season games against Alabama and LSU, Venables is working on finding the right fit to lead the offense ahead of signing day on Dec. 4 and the transfer portal opening on Dec. 9.
It’s been a challenging season offensively. Seth Littrell was fired on Oct. 20 after his offense ranked No. 129 nationally. Jackson Arnold was benched for Michael Hawkins Jr. who was then benched for Arnold.
But one thing hasn’t been lost on Venables: the commitment from his offensive staff — offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns, interim offensive coordinator Joe Jon Finley, wide receivers coach Emmett Jones and running backs coach DeMarco Murray — throughout the historic struggles.
“I’m very, just deeply appreciative and I’ve told them in front of the team a couple different times,” Venables said Wednesday on the SEC coaches teleconference. “Certainly, I’ve told them several times behind closed doors. I haven’t been in that position before, but I’m also very sensitive to what all is involved in that regard. But they’ve been consummate professionals.”

Whenever a program hires a new offensive coordinator, the current staff members’ jobs are up in the air. Some coordinators prefer to bring colleagues they’ve worked with at their prior stops or at least have say in who is hired.
