BATON ROUGE — Brian Kelly heard all the gnashing of teeth from fans during the open transfer portal window over the summer.
LSU football was very much in the market for defensive linemen and, one-by-one, the couple they had their sights set on, decided to commit elsewhere. By the end of the window, LSU added a Division II transfer from Grand Valley State, Jay’Viar Suggs, who has been a solid piece on the interior — recording the third-most sacks on the defense so far this season.
But, admittedly, it wasn’t everything LSU needed.
The next transfer portal window opens Dec. 9, shortly after the early signing period, and closes Dec. 28. Kelly told reporters Monday that he and his staff will have a much different approach this go around.

“We’ll be very aggressive,” Kelly said. “I think everybody knows last summer that we weren’t very aggressive in the transfer portal and we put together a defensive line with minimal resources. We’ve really put ourselves in a position, and I’ll use this term loosely, well under the ‘cap’ to where we could be quite aggressive this year. And we will be in that area.”
LSU didn’t spend many Name, Image and Likeness dollars on the transfer portal this past offseason, where it brought in Suggs, wide receiver C.J. Daniels, Zavion Thomas, Gio Paez and a few others.
And Kelly said that was by design. One of the biggest reasons for that was he felt players he and his staff searched for in the portal duplicated a lot of what LSU already had on its roster.
This cycle, he said, will be different. So, LSU plans to be more assertive to find players that will be able to impact the team the right…
