New Mexico offensive coordinator Jason Beck nominated for Broyles Award

Nov. 26—New Mexico offensive coordinator Jason Beck has been nominated for the Broyles Award, given annually to the top assistant coach in college football.

The Lobos’ first year play-caller is one of 65 nominees for the award named after former Arkansas head coach Frank Broyles. Fifteen finalists and a winner will be announced in December.

A former quarterbacks coach for Bronco Mendenhall at Virginia and BYU, Beck has overseen one of the most prolific offenses in UNM history. The Lobos are averaging 33.8 points and 484.5 yards per game; the latter mark is the best in the 12-team Mountain West and fourth in the 134-team FBS.

Quarterback Devon Dampier has thrived under Beck’s tutelage, passing for 2,592 yards and rushing for 1,065. The 5-foot-10, 198-pound sophomore has accounted for 28 total touchdowns (12 passing, 16 rushing), and could threaten the single-season program record of 33.

Wide receiver Luke Wysong (60 receptions, 771 yards, one touchdown) and running back Eli Sanders (942 yards, nine touchdowns) have also had career years in Beck’s offense. Dampier and Sanders have combined for 2,007 of UNM’s 2,738 rushing yards, a top-five mark nationally.

The Lobos (5-6, 3-3) travel to Hawaii for a regular season finale on Saturday. Kickoff is 9 p.m. MT.
