Don’t let Senior Day get too emotional
A handful of Ole Miss players will be playing their last regular-season games at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium on Friday, including senior quarterback Jaxson Dart and senior wide receiver Jordan Watkins. The Egg Bowl has tons of emotion as it is, and there will likely be a little extra involved for players who meet with their families on the field before the game kicks off. The sooner those jitters are out of the way, the better.
Shut down the running backs
Mississippi State has had a rough go of it in 2024, but the Bulldogs do have a pair of talented running backs in Davon Booth and Johnnie Daniels. Booth and Daniels have run for 721 yards and 530 yards, respectively, and they have nine combined rushing scores. Booth also has four receiving touchdowns. The Bulldogs are starting true freshman quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr., so the sooner the Rebels can make the offense one-dimensional, the sooner Ole Miss’ devastating pass rush can do what it does best: wreck games in the opposing backfield.
Make life hard for Kevin Coleman Jr.
Speaking of Van Buren – his top target, Kevin Coleman Jr., leads Mississippi State with 68 catches for 814 yards and five touchdowns. No one else on the team has more than 368 receiving yards. Coleman is by far the biggest threat in Jeff Lebby’s passing game. Whether it be putting senior Trey Amos on him for the whole game or rotating bodies depending on the situation, containing Coleman will be essential in limiting big plays.
Run the ball when it makes sense
