‘I love playing in my hometown,’: Joseph Immediato’s hard work pays off for UTEP

The El Paso student athlete signing with UTEP story is always a happy one — a chance to see a former high school star make good for the local college team in front of his family and friends.

So it was when Eastwood High School’s Joseph Immediato, a standout offensive lineman and a state qualifier in wrestling, signed with UTEP football in 2021.

He did look around and consider other opportunities, but the chance to play in El Paso proved irresistible.

“It wasn’t always going to be UTEP, but I’m glad I did make that decision because now I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” said Immediato as he prepared for UTEP’s Saturday rivalry game at New Mexico State University.

“I love playing in my hometown. El Paso is a great city,” Immediato added. “I came from Eastwood High School, we always looked up to UTEP. UTEP has always been the hometown heroes and it’s great being a Miner now representing the city.”

Joseph Immediato’s long road to the top

The second chapter of the feel-good story, though, often begins decidedly different than the dream.

Here is Immediato’s bio on his UTEP webpage: 2021 (freshman) Redshirted during the 2021 season; 2022 (rs freshman) did not see action; 2023 (rs sophomore) Played in 11 games, mostly on special teams.

There is the reality for most El Pasoans on the UTEP roster. There is the dream becoming a harder existance.

That bio will read a little differently next season when Immediato is a senior.

On Nov. 23 at Tennessee, some injuries on the offensive line (actually to another local, center Ivan Escobar) spun a revolving door, and the next man up was the 6-foot-4, 318-pound Immediato.
