Nov. 29—BEMIDJI — The Bemidji State football program has yet to lose a game in the opening round of the Division II Super Region 4 Tournament.
Despite a sparkling 4-0 record in the first weekend of the postseason, the Beavers have yet to win a second-round matchup and advance to the tournament quarterfinals.
This Saturday, BSU has a shot to buck that trend in its matchup against Western Colorado.
“It would mean everything to us,” fifth-year senior defensive tackle Stephen Hoffman said. “Obviously our main goal is the (national title), but one game at a time and getting past the second round would be huge just for the program, for all of us to feel kind of almost that weight off our shoulders. … We’re ready for it, for sure.”
That one-game-at-a-time approach isn’t a newly-introducted mentality for the postseason.
It’s that approach that the Beavers have taken all season, that kept the program on track through some midseason struggles and earned BSU its fourth consecutive playoff appearance.
“You always want to take another step, that’s the whole point of college football, and the ultimate carrot is out there with the championships,” head coach Brente Bolte said. “But I think for us to just focus on one game at a time, that’s kind of been our approach all year of being able to do that. “So worry about us, worry about doing our jobs. (If) we’re fortunate to get out of there with the win and take the next step, that’s what we’re shooting and striving to do. It’s hard to come by this time of year and you’ve just got to go out and find a way just like we did down in Texas.”
Standing in the way of a program-first second round win are the Mountaineers
Based on yards per game alone, Bemidji State will be taking on the best offense it has faced all year.
Western Colorado ranks No. 18 in Division II football in offensive yards…
