Kadale Williams sets MHSAA state championship record, won’t be playing at Central Michigan

The name Kadale Williams is going to be in the Michigan high school football history books forever, as the Jackson Lumen Christi senior running back set the record for the most rushing yards in a state championship game.

Williams ran for 314 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-18 win over Lansing Catholic.

But Williams doesn’t expect to see his name on the Central Michigan football roster in 2025. He decommitted from the Chippewas at some point before CMU head coach Jim McElwain announced his retirement Nov. 20 after six seasons.

“I don’t really like talking too much about that,” Williams said Friday after winning the MHSAA Division 6 state championship at Ford Field, “but with coach retiring and things like that, I decided to open up my commitment and stuff like that.”

In Friday’s game, Williams finished with 27 carries for 314 yards and five touchdowns. He broke a rushing yards record that stood for 19 years and tied a rushing touchdowns record that’s been standing for 13 years. Both records are for state championship games.

“Not going to lie, it’s good and all,” Williams said, “but it doesn’t mean anything. I’m just happy we got the win.”

In 2024, Williams compiled 2,255 rushing yards and 39 rushing touchdowns, all while guiding Lumen Christi to its MHSAA-record 14th state championship victory.

He is a three-time football state champion.
